Hey Fams!

God’s gift of wisdom to King Solomon did not end with Solomon; he shared this wisdom through his proverbs. Solomon wrote in Proverbs 1:2 that these words were for learning wisdom and discipline, understanding insightful sayings, receiving instruction, and teaching the inexperienced. Through all the insight he gained as the wisest man on earth, he came back to this truth: “The fear of the LORD is the beginning of knowledge” (Proverbs 1:7).

What does it mean to fear the Lord? How can we know that we have true wisdom?

Fearing the Lord means honoring Him as holy and revering Him as God alone. Solomon recognized the folly of a life lived in his own strength and wisdom. He knew that pursuing the Lord through genuine trust and obedience is the only way to live a life that matters. He beckoned readers to trust in the Lord with all their heart and not depend on their own understanding. The proverbs reveal to us that wisdom is not a mere intellectual exercise. Wisdom is a Person, Jesus, and by trusting in Him we find salvation.

Many proverbs offer practical guidance for interacting with the world: avoiding peer pressure, pursuing the path of peace, and treating others fairly. However, all of the practical guidance is grounded in following God's wisdom above any earthly knowledge. Solomon wrote of the favor God’s people experience when they cling to His ways above all else.

Consider your relationship to godly wisdom. Reflect on the seasons of life that have led you closest to the Lord and in obedience to Him. Remember God’s generosity and kindness toward His followers: “Now if any of you lacks wisdom, he should ask God—who gives to all generously and ungrudgingly—and it will be given to him” (James 1:5).

Invite the children in your care to see the beauty of pursuing God’s ways and trusting Him, both for the promise of His presence and the wisdom He provides in our everyday lives. Life everlasting begins when we come to faith in Him!

Family Discipleship Plan

Family Discipleship Plan •

  • Read Proverbs 1:1-7; 3:1-12; 4:10-19 from the Bible.

  • On March 1, 2017, a group of people set the world record for the largest game of telephone.
1,792 participants lined up and passed a message person-to-person to break the previous game record and to raise money for a local charity. It’s amazing to see how so many people can come together for a good cause, but one can only imagine how mixed up that message got as it was passed on!

God showed His love to Solomon by giving him wisdom to rule as king over Israel, and God shows us His love by making sure that the wisdom He gave Solomon is passed on to us through the Bible. Wisdom is more than just being smart or getting good grades. It’s about knowing the right thing to do and doing it.

The book of Proverbs is full of wisdom to show us how to love God, follow Him, and enjoy life with Him. Proverbs 3:5 reminds us to trust in God with all our hearts and not lean on our own understanding. That means, even when we don’t understand everything, we should still trust that God knows what’s best for us. When we love and trust God, He gives us wisdom to make better decisions and know right from wrong.

Solomon’s proverbs encourage God’s people to trust in the Lord. Jesus trusted in God His Father throughout His life on earth, all the way to His death on the cross for our sins. He rose again and continues to lead us to love and trust God the Father.

Pray: God, thank You for Your wisdom. Help us trust You with all our hearts and lean on Your understanding, not our own. Please guide us in making good decisions and teach us to listen to the wise advice You put in our lives through Your Word and through others who know You. Amen.

  • Preschool:

"Fear the LORD and turn from evil."
    Proverbs 3:7

    1st-5th:

“Don’t be wise in your own eyes. Have respect for the Lord and avoid evil.”
    Proverbs 3:7

  • Mornings

Ask God to help you trust Him today—even if you don’t always understand what you’re going through. Ask Him to remind you of His promise to be with you and to guide you at all times.

How does God’s presence with you help to face difficult times?

    Evenings

Thank God for giving us the Holy Spirit to live with us and in us when we believe in Jesus. Thank God for how the Holy Spirit reminds us of Jesus’ teachings and helps us grow in the wisdom of God’s Word.

  • For Fun

Draw a large tree on a piece of paper. Use green construction paper to create leaves that can be taped to the tree. On each leaf, write down a wise saying or piece of advice you’ve learned from the Bible or from people in your life. This can be your parents’ advice, Bible verses, or something you’ve learned at church. Talk about the ways God has given us His wisdom and watch how your tree of wisdom grows!

    To Serve

Ask those who lead in your church’s children’s ministry to give you a list of Bible storybooks or resources needed in the ministry. Consider purchasing and donating a few of the books or resources as a way of helping younger kids hear God’s wisdom. Pray over the donations and ask God to use the items to teach kids of His goodness and faithfulness.
